Topic: Gabe Gomez – 22 year old, millennial film-maker

Something interesting happened with today’s buzz.  I was reading a popular blog this morning by Ruby Pseudo, where she highlighted ‘23 young adults to watch out for’.  As I was reading through her list, one name rang familiar to me – Gabe Gomez.  So I went back in the community archives and low and behold, there was Gabe’s name.  One of our NY community members went to school with Gabe and was promoting his work for him.  Gabe directed , edited and produced a full length film – called “The Spot”.  I checked out the trailer only, but was blown away by the depth of the storyline.  I put out the link to the community and they really responded well to Gabe’s talented piece.  When I saw Ruby’s list and Gabe was on it, I had to feature him in today’s buzz!

‘The Spot’ is a coming to age film of a teen coming to grips with parental abandonment.

Check out his trailer on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iccUe1In9eI

What our community members said about Gabe and his trailer:

“Wow, this trailer was very relatable.  I can’t believe a 22 year old did this!  So impressive!  I would love to see someone like him break out and become famous.  Keep me posted on anything else he comes out with.” – Dean, 19

“I want to see the full movie now!  Where can I check that out.  Wow, I got chills with the story and it was shot really well.  I am a film major and was really inspired to see something of this quality come out from someone my age.” – John, 21

“Um, I am speechless!  I want to see this movie!  There are not enough of movies that capture the life of teen problems.  It’s all fairy-tale and that is just stupid.  Life many times does not follow the happily-ever-after theme.” – Jess, 18

Topic: Nintendo DSi

The Nintendo DS & DS Lite were majorly successful among tweens and young teens – and now the next version (the DSi) is about to launch in April and tweens/ young teens are beyond excited.  This new version of DS is different in the following ways:

  • thinner packaging
  • a bigger screen
  • audio enhancements
  • .3 megapixel (640×480) camera
  • an SD memory card slot, making it possible to take pictures with the DSi and then view them on the Nintendo Wii.
  • a built-in browser, and it’s possible to download games and keep them on the DSi.

With today’s youth being more and more mobile, they are wanting to carry their entertainment with them.  For those tweens that don’t have cell phones yet, these handheld video game devices are their form of mobile entertainment .

What our community is saying about Nintendo DSi:

“I am so excited for the DSi to come out.  I have had my DS for a couple years and now want the DSi.  I love that it comes with a camera and that can download games from the web.  I am obsessed with my Pokemon Diamond game – so I hope to get new games for this as well.” – Darren, 12

“I love the new DSi – well at least from what I heard about it.  It comes out next month and am getting it the minute it comes out.  I like that it comes with a bigger screen and a camera.  YAAAAY!  Can’t wait!” – Becca, 11

“I am a DS freak!  I swear, whereever I am, there is my DSLite.  I can’t help it.  It’s what keeps me from going insane!  I play Animal Crossing: Wild World! all the time, as well as Nintendogs – Lab and friends.  Love pups!  I cant wait for the new DS version to come out.  It’s mine!” – Melissa, 13

“The new Nintendo DSi looks cool.  Can’t wait to check it out and plead with my parents on why I need it to survive!” – Whitney, 12

Topic: Ripped/frayed Denim

Unpack those ripped, worn in jeans you put away after the death of grunge – they’re back – BIG TIME!  Blame it on the current state of the economy but second-hand, comfortable, worn in styles are being adorned by some of the most fashionable teens and college community members.  Teens/young adults express how they feel through they’re style.  The mood is somber and they’re allowances are being cut back, so they’re reaching into their closets and seeing what they can transform into something new.  Jeans are leading the transformation, as they become shredded, cut and bleached for both style and comfort.

What our community members are saying about this trend:

“I am all about the ripped jeans look right now.  I think people don’t want to look all made up and blingy anymore.  We’re going through rough times and to wear something glitzy would be totally obnoxious.” – Lisa, 17

“Ripped denim is all over campus.  Me and my roomate took a scissor and a cheese grater to our most worn in looking jeans.  Comfort and basics are where it’s at right now.” – Tricia, 19

“I saw Rachel Bilson wearing ripped denim last year and thought to myself – hmmm, that looks cool – I am going to do that to my jeans – and did.  Now, ripped denim is being sold all over the place.  I saw a few pairs by Seven that were all torn up and then at American Eagle (for much cheaper).  It’s something you can totally do yourself and for not much cost.” – Morgan, 16

“A lot of guys in my school are looking like Kurt Kobain reincarnated!  Ripped jeans, Converse and cardigan sweaters are the uniform of choice.  It’s sloppy as hell but the girls seem to like it.” – James, 16

IAB Reaches for Web Video Ad Standards (TV Week)

Posted by Generate Studios on February 23rd 2009 in Generate Press

February 22, 2009
By Daisy Whitney, TV Week

Underscoring the urgent need for advertising standards in the online video business, the Interactive Advertising Bureau is launching its first effort this week to develop best practices for ads in TV shows on the Web.

The IAB effort centers on “long-form” Web programs, including full episodes of TV shows that run online such as ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” or Fox’s “House.”

The IAB’s latest initiative reflects the growth in online video viewing. According to comScore, Internet users in the United States are watching more than 14 billion videos each month. TV series are a relatively small portion of that total, but they command the bulk of online ad dollars. Research firm eMarketer predicts online video advertising will grow 45% this year to $850 million.

At its initial meeting this week, the IAB’s digital video committee will tackle issues surrounding best practices for the number and placement of ads in online TV shows, said Jeremy Fain, VP of industry services at the IAB.

“Digital video has seen probably the biggest explosion of innovation over the last few years, and that has also led to some confusion in the marketplace,” he said. “With long-form there has not been a lot of discussion on best practices when it comes to ads.”

Early research into how receptive viewers are to ads in TV shows online comes from ABC.

Earlier this year, ABC said its research found that doubling the ad load from four to eight ads in an hourlong show online doesn’t decrease consumer interest.

That’s the sort of information the IAB wants to build on when it kicks off its best practices work this week. The online video ad industry also is eager to develop a consensus on standards—especially what constitutes a view for an online video. Many ad deals are structured based on the number of views a clip gets.

“Our industry is in desperate need of standardized metrics and nomenclature that accurately reflect consumer behavior,” said Jordan Levin, CEO of multimedia production company Generate and the former head of The WB.

His solution lies in technology.

“All Web video must allow for open-source, encoded technology to provide consistent measurement across players and platforms,” Mr. Levin said.

Advertisers and producers also would benefit from a simple and standardized definition of what constitutes a view.

“Perhaps a 30-second or 60-second requirement on a view across all video players [would work],” said Marc Hustvedt, co-founder of Tubefilter.TV, an online video news site. “Frankly we need a quick, standardized and easily understandable metric for how many people watched that video. The public understands Nielsen ratings that get published in USA Today. We need a number that’s that simple.”

As standards take shape, it’s important to remember that every advertiser is different. Some want views and some want a specific audience, said Keith Richman, CEO of online video network Break Media.

The proliferation of distribution outlets makes measuring video on TV and on the Web more difficult, said Adam Gerber, CEO of online audience measurement firm Quantcast.

“Every video experience is programmed, delivered and consumed differently. ‘Views’ are meaningless if they are calculated on an ad hoc basis, without regard for what marketers care most about—an understanding of the audience that is engaged and being delivered,” he said.

Topic: Celebs are people too

Yesterday was all about Michael Phelps, today we turn the topic to Chris Brown.  When our community heard of the incident between Chris Brown and Rihanna they were shocked!  And after seeing the bruised and beaten picture of Rihanna yesterday leaked by TMZ, they are outraged.

Last week, before the picture was released I asked the community the following question:  What do you think about what’s going on with Chris Brown? Select all that apply440 teens between the ages of 13-18 weighed in.  After this picture was released yesterday, I went back out with the question – asking them if their thoughts have changed on the matter (318 of the 440 responded)…here’s how they responded:

FEB 13 FEB 19
I think I need to hear the whole story before I pass judgement. 46.2% 34%
I don’t really care 19.5% 18%
I still like his music, but him as a person – not so much 16% 54%
I think he should go to jail for a very long time 13% 30%
I used to like him, but now with what’s happened,
I am not a fan any longer
10% 22%
I still like him, he just made a mistake 6.6% 4%
Other 11.2% 18%

Other comments (2.13):

There is no excuse to treat a woman like that. He is a little man.

I think we need to wait and see before we pass judgement!”

“He’s human and it’s no worse then what other celebs do – he just got caught.”

“Do we even know if it’s true.  Let’s wait and see please.”

“IF he is guilty- he should get what anyone else gets… again the media is out of control.”

“He is a public figure and should behave accordingly. The problem is that celebs do whatever they want and the public still fawns all over them. If this were a neighbor no one in the neighborhood would have anything to do with him but because he is a celeb he will get away with it. He should get in line with the rest of drunks, drug addicts, abusers, and law breakers that call themselves celebs.”

“Another Bobby Brown? Ike Turner? Will Rihanna be like Whitney or Tina?”

“This is not the first time we will hear about this case & it definitely won’t be the last, the media is making a big deal because he is a star & need to keep in mind that they were not present when this happened so everything they repeat is just hearsay.”

Other comments (2.19)

“I am so freakin’ appalled by the picture of Rihanna, I literally tore the picture I had of him off my wall.  He’s trash!”

“OMG, I am sick to my stomach.  No one deserves this.  He needs to pay!”

“Im a dude and in my opinion you have to be a weak man to hit a women.  He is going to get his ass beat by JayZ and Kanye.  What a jackass!”

“Ok, before I was like ‘let’s wait and see’ – now I am like ‘I saw all I need to know that Chris Brown no longer has me as a fan’

“I still don’t know what happened – but poor Rhi-Rhi doesn’t deserve to look like that.”

“Damn, that’s serious.  He should go to jail or do some kind of community service at a women’s shelter…and get anger management help!”

       Takeaways:

Teens weren’t quick to pass judgement – until they saw the picture of Rihanna bruised

A picture speaks a thousand words.  Before the picture of Rihanna was released, the teens were not ready to deem Chris Brown a bad person.  This is because teens have grown tired of the misinformation given time and time again by the press.  They are more wise to the ways of spinning a story to create controversy.  Nowadays, this generation needs more proof then just a reporters take on the story.  In terms of the Chris Brown situation, once the story was backed by the visual of Rihanna – their opinion on the matter changed.  Teen don’t immediately believe the hype – unless the hype can be proven by a photograph.

Can celebs come back from the crime they commit?  We have seen celebs rise back up after getting  caught doing drugs, getting drunk, smacking photographers, making sex-tapes, cheating on their partners, paying for prostitution, etc.  - but can a celeb bounce back after beating their celeb girlfriend?  We have seen this happen with Ike and Tina and Bobby and Whitney… but either men at the time were as well liked and as famous as Chris Brown.  The jury is still out but if the results above say anything about the comeback of Chris Brown – his future looks bleak.

What about Rihanna?  Rihanna was the sweetheart of the music world before this incident – and now we will see star rise even more so.  This could change though if the rumors that she has been calling Chris Brown, saying ‘she wants him back’ are true.  She will lose instant crediability and prove to be a weak rolemodel to her young adoring fans.   If she was smart, she would start her own movement towards self-esteem and school young girls on her experience in an abusive relationship – as well as write about her ordeal and put her experience and lessons to music (ala Mary J Blidge).  She will then acquire more fans and gain more respect and credibility as an artist.

Actors: Nolan Gerard Funk  & Tammin Sursok

Move over Zack Efron, there is a new actor, singer, dancer in town and he’s stealing tween/teen hearts right out from under you.  His name: Nolan Gerard Funk, the new star of the much buzzed about Nickelodeon’s movie musical, “Spectacular!”  Before Nolan’s lead role in “Spectacular” he has bit parts in Smallville, Supernatural and Aliens in America but it wasn’t until his role as ‘Nikko’ in “Spectacular” – that has tween/teen girls screaming for more ‘Funk’!

Nolan’s character in “Spectacular” is this too-cool-for-school, daring, bold, confident, edgy rocker, and who gets kicked out of his band and dumped by his girlfriend – but he is so determined to become a rock star, he’s willing to do anything to get there.

The actor is also going to be on the new ABC show ‘Castle’…so watch how his young fans flock to watch him on that non-tween show.

This is ‘THE’ actor to watch right now – as bedroom shrines across America are being dedicated to him!  Here’s the “Spectacular” trailer to see what all the buzz is about:

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=44747751

What community members are saying about Nolan:

“OMG, Spectacular is the best movie ever!  My friends and I got together the other night to watch it and to say we’re hooked and in love is an understatement.  Nolan/Nikko is just SO hot and talented.  I thought Zac Efron could sing and dance – but not after seeing Nolan.  His fans are calling him ‘The Funkster’ – but we just calling HOT!” – Jill, 15

“Nolan Gerard Funk is what’s hot right now.  He can act, sing and dance and makes my heart skip a beat every time he comes on screen.  Spectacular kicks HSM’s (High School Musical) butt.” – Kris, 14

“I heart Nolan Funk and he doesn’t know it yet but he hearts me as well!  I tivoed Spectacular the other night and now have watched it 37 times since then.  I plan on getting to 50 by the end of the week.  I can’t get enough of him.  I also like Tammin but he likes her in the movie so poo on her.” – Yasmin, 12

Tammin Sursok

Tammin is another actor to watch out for!  She plays Courtney’s in “Spectacular”!  Her characters world revolves around her sequin-filled show choir (called ‘Spectacular’).  When her boyfriend breaks up with her and drops out of her show choir – she suggests bad-boy Nikko (Nolan) join.  And that’s when the sing/dance-fest begins.  Fans are tagging Tammin as the “NEXT-BIG-THING” and SO MUCH more talented than Vanessa Hudgens!  Oh and since the debut of “Spectacular”, tweeners have a new anthem- and it’s the song “Break My Heart”.  Watch for the song and lyrics to make their way to their Myspace/Facebook/Twitter pages.

What community members are saying about Tammin:

“I loved Tammin’s character Courtney in Spectacular.  She was so talented and passionate about her art.  Tammin is WAY more talented then Demi Lovato (Camp Rock) and Vanessa Hudgens (HSM) and deserves to get as much praise as they do and MORE!” – Tabitha, 16

“Who is this amazingly pretty and way talented girl in Spectacular.  OMG, she is SO flippin amazing and I can’t take my eyes off of her she is so pretty.  She makes the other tweeny-boppers look and sound like poop!  I need to find out more about her – I’m obsessed.”! – Jen, 14

“I really liked and related to Courtney in Spectacular.  She is talented and falls for the bad boy.  I looked up who she was.  Her name is Tammin and if I were a psychic I would say she is going to be the next Miley/Vanessa/Demi!  She’s more pretty and can sing so much better.” – Maren, 13

Beauty: MAC Cosmetics Hello Kitty Collection

Leave it to MAC, the most creative and vibrant cosmetic company, to partner with the most powerful kitty in the world!  MAC released their Hello Kitty collection last week and the response has been overwhelming as they are already running out of product.

If you ever had the chance to observe a MAC counter in a department store you will know that it’s the most crowded section of the store and the demographic of those crowds tend to sku between the ages of 13 -21 years old.  The reason for the popularity among the young, is MAC’s sense of adventure when it comes to its products and color collections.  They encourage their users to self-express and have fun with color.  Well the fun gets even more heightened by their current homage to Hello Kitty (last year they partnered with Barbie).  There are two lines available…the Hello Kitty Kouture line and the Hello Kitty Colour collection.  Both lines are limited edition (8 weeks max), which adds to the ‘must-have-now’ frenzy!

Here’s what our community is saying about the line:

“I placed my orders for the Hello Kitty MAC products back when the website posted their ‘wait list’ back in January.  These products will be collector items for us Hello Kitty fanatics.  MAC and Kitty are the perfect combination!” – Lisa, 18

“I heart HK and am obsessed with MAC products.  I went the day the cosmetics hit store shelves and there was a line around the counter.  It was worth the wait bc the colors are so cute and ‘Kitty’-like and don’t get me started on the containers the cosmetics come in.  I am in love.” – Bekka, 16

“If I had to pair two of my favorite brands it would be MAC and Sanrio – so when I heard MAC was doing a Hello Kitty line of makeup, I freaked the hell out.  I got on the site’s waiting list so I was sure to get some of the coveted products.  I just need the lipgloss set and then I will be set.  It was sold out on the site and at two Nordstrom’s by my house.  I am still searching for it.” – Jillian, 17

“Hello Kitty is my favorite cartoon character!  I feel what ever you put her on, it’s guaranteed to sell!  I have my own HK collection and now that MAC (which has awesome makeup) has a makeup line for Hello Kitty, I will be spending my allowance on that.” – Allison, 14

Website: FaceInHole.com

Every so often our community members come across a website that they cannot get enough of – and this past week all the buzz has been about FaceinHole.com.  The name of the site tells you exactly what it’s all about – upload a photo of your face and place it on the body of an actor, an advertisement, a cartoon character, a piece of art, a movie poster, etc.  This generation loves to self-express through their photos so when applications like faceinhole come along, they spend endless hours creating and sharing.  I really feel this site and its creators know exactly who they are developing this service for.  It’s all about self-expression, fun, sociability and it’s FREE (love this line on their ‘about me’ page – At FACEinHOLE.com your fun is our pay! …so go and have fun!).  The only warning I have for you –  it’s incredibly addicting!

PS – take notice whose face was super imposed on Superman’s body…

http://www.faceinhole.com/us/

What are community is saying about this site:

“OMG, I am so addicted to my new favorite website – faceinhole.com.  It’s where you insert your face on the body of any celeb, cartoon charater, etc.  It’s so fun!  I currently have my face on the body of Kristen Stewart standing next to Robert Pattinson of Twilight!  It’s my Myspace image!” – Patricia, 16

“Faceinhole is the new Jibjab.  Once Jibjab starting charging its users to make postcards, etc…that’s when they became lame.  Faceinhole is totally free and more fun!” – Andrew, 14

“Faceinhole RULES!  I made my birthday invitations off of creating an image on that site.  I uploaded my pic on the body of Wonder Woman!  I got so many great compliments on it!  I spent 3 hours just roaming the site trying my head on different people.  It’s so much fun!” – Kim, 17
