There are very few categories that have yet to feel the crunch from the current recession – video games is one of them. Sales of software grew 14 percent during February, and console sales were up 10 percent in the same period. That’s nearly US$1.5 billion worth of revenue. With more and more people are staying home these days to save money, they are engaging with video games as a substitute form of entertainment. Video games provide them with the fun they need to escape from reality. As more people engage with the video game category, the more they want to know about their favorite video games, characters and the inside scoop on how to improve their ‘game’. There’s one site, created by some ex-GameSpot employees called ‘GiantBomb.com’ that serves up exactly that and more.
Our gamer-obsessed Insighters are buzzing about this site, calling it the ‘one-stop-shop for all you need to know about video games’. One of our community members tell us that Giant Bomb is the ‘first to release information on new releases’ or insider ‘tips on improving your skill set’ on a specific game.
Site’s that give this ‘need to know first’ demographic information that puts them in the position of power among their friends are extremely favored. Being ‘the’ informant within their friendship circles raises their social currency. Giantbomb.com is the source for those who both want to learn about their favorite video games and in addition want to be the first to supply their friends with the information they uncovered.
